According to a new and alarming study, the coronavirus strain that came out of China late last year and caused a pandemic that we’re still going through has unfortunately mutated into a more dominant strain that is even deadlier and more contagious.

Coronavirus Mutates Into Deadlier Strain

Back in December last year, an unsuspecting few cases of what appeared to be pneumonia that started in the Chinese province of Wuhan turned out to be a new strain of coronavirus. Ever since, the coronavirus has spread to the majority of other nations and countries, leading to a pandemic that has pushed a lot of these nations to go into lockdown while experts try to look for a vaccine.

Now a new research reveals that SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus strain behind the pandemic, has managed to mutate into a more dominant strain that is more contagious than before.

The 33-page report tackling this, made by researchers from the Los Alamos National Laboratory and published Thursday in BioRxiv, stated that the virus began spreading in Europe back in early February before it migrated to other parts of the world.

Come March, the virus has since mutated into a more dominant form.

Furthermore, the researchers also warned that if the coming warmer months aren’t effective in making the cases subside much like what it does with the seasonal flu, it could mutate further and even limit the effectiveness of vaccines that are currently being developed all over the world. This is because some of these researchers are using genetic sequences from the virus’ early days in testing.

“This is hard news. Our team at LANL was able to document this mutation and its impact on transmission only because of a massive global effort of clinical people and experimental groups, who make new sequences of the virus (SARS-CoV-2) in their local communities available as quickly as they possibly can,” Bette Korber, a computational biologist at Los Alamos and lead author of the study, said.

To date, Korber and her team have managed to identify some 14 new mutations for the virus causing the pandemic.
