Kaduna: Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kaduna State, have arrested a 58-year-old man for being in possession of expired Tramadol Hydrocloride drugs worth over 13 million Naira.
Parading the suspect before reporters in Zaria, Kaduna State on Saturday, the NDLEA Commander, Mr Samuel Azige, said that the suspect was arrested in his shop in Kano State with 1,544 cartons of pain-reliever drugs which expired in 2014.
“The suspect has a big warehouse in Zaria where he stores the goods he supplied to his customers in Kano,” Mr Azige told reporters.
He said that each carton of the illicit drugs, costs about 9,000 Naira.
But the suspect, who is a patent medicine dealer, denied the allegation, saying he bought the drugs from a pharmaceutical company in Lagos long before it expired.
He also claimed to have kept the drugs at a warehouse in Zaria pending the time he would get approval from NAFDAC and NDLEA before destroying it.
Mr Azige explained that apart from the fact that the drugs had expired, they were banned drugs that had serious implication on the consumers especially the youths.
He stated that investigation was already on, while the suspect would be charged to court within the next one week.
