Nigeria’s First Mobile Stroke Unit

Regions Stroke and Neuroscience Hospital launches first “MOBILE STROKE UNIT” in Nigeria.

A mobile stroke unit is an ambulance that furnishes services to triage, diagnose, evaluate, and/or treat symptoms of an acute Stroke.

A Stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die.

It is a medical emergency requiring prompt intervention. Early action can minimize brain damage and potential complications. But Nigeria those not have a system that stresses the urgency of care.

This is the reason many are thrilled that pregnant women and older adults, who are more predisposed to a stroke have a timely medical intervention during an acute emergency.

The Mobile Stroke Unit

A Vascular and Stroke Neurologist, Dr Benjamin Dozie Anyanwu who is also the Chief Medical Officer Regions Stroke and Neuroscience Hospital, announced this new development via his official LinkedIn handle.

These are his words;

Our specialized ambulance contain point-of-care laboratory and ability to exchange videos of patient examinations, with real time voice conferencing between the physicians at the hospital and a trained stroke nurse on board.

No CT scan machine is on board due to bad road networks, but we are able to pick up a Stroke patient and obtain imaging within their immediate vicinity, diagnose and begin treatment directly at the emergency site, and en route to our dedicated Stroke hospital.

Time is Brain – join us as we create a state of the art care for stroke patients in Nigeria.
