MISO-FEM: A solution to improving Maternal Health in Nigeria

Nigeria’s estimated maternal death per year is 40,000 which accounts for about 14% of global maternal mortality even though it contributes only 2% of the global population. Nigeria is the second largest contributor to maternal mortality worldwide, after India.

One Nigerian woman dies every 13 minutes (i.e. 109 women each day) from pregnancy and childbirth and about 30 to 50 women will experience life-long conditions and disabilities (e.g. obstetric fistula). Most of these deaths and health consequences are entirely preventable.

Miso-Fem is DKT’s high-quality brand of misoprostol – a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog. It is an important drug in obstetric and gynecological practice because of its uterotonic and cervical priming action. Compared to other uterotonics, misoprostol has the advantage of being stable at room temperature, it is safe, very affordable and widely available.

The 5 leading causes of maternal mortality in Nigeria are Post-Partum hemorrhage, unsafe abortion, sepsis, and hypertensive disorders (including pre-eclampsia and eclampsia). Miso-Fem has been effectively used to prevent or treat the majority of these deadly conditions.

Miso-Fem is WHO recommended for preventing and treating Postpartum Hemorrhage which is recognized as the most common (yet preventable) cause of maternal death in Nigeria. It is also used for treating first-trimester miscarriage and in providing therapeutic (life-saving) abortion care.

In addition, Miso-Fem can be used to induce labor in cases when continuing the pregnancy will either adversely affect the baby and/or the mother such as in cases of gestational or chronic hypertension, pre-eclampsia, diabetes, premature rupture of membranes, severe fetal growth restriction, and prolonged gestation.

Miso-Fem has its Drug Master File and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient approved in both the US and EU market. Furthermore, to monitor and ensure the post-marketing quality, every batch of Miso-Fem in circulation within Nigeria is randomly sampled and tested on a quarterly basis at a W.H.O approved overseas laboratory. This helps to ensure that the use of Miso-Fem will always result in therapeutic success.

DKT distributes Misoprostol along with a large basket of other products to all parts of the country including rural and hard to reach areas like Borno state. DKT has over 85 well trained medical sales representatives and managerial staff across the country who are mobile with vans and vehicles in order to ensure swift delivery of products to your doorstep.

It is a well-known fact that DKT can service any order within 12 hours irrespective of the location. The DKT medical representatives are equipped with knowledge on contraceptives, detailing aids and a huge amount of energy and willingness to pass their knowledge and increase healthcare providers capacity.
