Meet Nigeria’s New Ministers of Health

Nigeria has got her newest Ministers in the Health Ministry.

President Buhari, in an elaborate swearing in ceremony, swore in Dr Osagie Emmanuel Ehanire – Substantive Minister of Health, and Dr Olurunnimbe Mamora – as Minister for State.

Both gentlemen are Medical Doctors.

Here is a brief about the Ministers;

Dr Osagie Emmanuel Ehanire – Minister for Health


Osagie Emmanuel Ehanire was born in November 1946. He hails from Oredo local government area of Edo state.


Osagie attended Government College, Ibadan, for his West African School Certificate as well as Higher School Certificate (HSC). He passed the HSC with distinction.

He studied Medicine at the University of Munich, Germany.

Ehanire in 1976 attended the Royal College of Surgeon in Ireland, Dublin where he obtained a post-graduate diploma in Anaesthetics as well as a certificate in General Surgery and Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery


Ehanire is a medical doctor who has worked in Germany as resident Anesthesiologist, resident Vascular Surgeon and resident general surgeon in Thoracic Surgery at various hospitals.

He also holds post-graduate diplomas from the teaching hospital of the University of Düsseldorf and Essen, Germany in the areas of anaesthesiology, general surgery, and orthopaedic trauma surgery.

He returned to Nigeria to continue his medical practice in 1982

In 1984, Dr Ehanire became a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS).

Up till 1985, he worked at the Department of Surgery (Orthopaedic Surgery) University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

In 1985, Ehanire joined Shell Development Company (SPDC) Hospital, Warri where he worked till 1990.

Before venturing into politics, he was Senior Registrar Clinical Instructor, University of Benin Teaching Hospital; Member of the old Bendel and Edo States Hospital Management Board; Clinical Course instructor, Fracture Internal Fixation course at the BG Accident Hospital, Duisburg, Germany.

He co-authored the orthopaedic book “The severely injured limb” edited By John Ackroyd.

Dr Ehanire also served at various times as a member of the boards of Edo State Health Management Board and T.Y Danjuma Foundation among others.

Political career

Aside from medical practice, Ehanire is a seasoned politician: he was the leader of CPC in Edo state and a member of the Buhari Campaign Organisation after the emergence of APC.

He served as minister of state for health in the first term of President Buhari from 2015 to 2019.

Dr Olurunnimbe Mamora – Minister of State for Health.


Dr. Mamora was born February 16, 1953


He obtained a B.Sc Health Sciences, Bachelor of Medicine, and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Ife, Ile Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University).


Mamora worked as a general practitioner before venturing into politics

Political career.

He was a National Delegate for the National Republican Convention( NRC) in 1990 and Secretary Lagos East of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) in 1998

He was elected to the Lagos state House of Assembly in 1999 and was elected speaker

Mamora was chairman of the Conference of Speakers from 2000 to 2001.

He was elected to the Senate in April 2003 and re-elected in 2007

Mamora was also a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament from 2003 to 2006

In 2003, he was appointed the chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and public petition

Both Ministers are expected to resume official duties immediately.

As if to dampen the spirit of the new health Minister, Dr Osagie Ehanire, some social media impersonator set up a Twitter handle in the name of the Minister.

This prompted a disclaimer from the official Twitter handle of the Nigerian Ministry of Health – members of the public are hereby warned not to associate with this Twitter handle/account.
