This post is a Medical Review of the Contraceptive Device, Implanon NXT… We took the liberty of doing more research, clinically and academically, on the product after some information was provided to us by DKT Nigeria.
Implanon NXT is a small, flexible, silicone rod (just about the size of a match stick) that contains 68mg of etonogestrel and can prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years. It is a long acting reversible contraception, available only on prescription and must be inserted by a health care provider.
This implant continuously releases very small doses of this hormone per day and also contains a small amount of barium sulphate which renders it visible under X-ray for easy removal.
HOW DOES IMPLANON NXT WORK?
As a contraceptive, Implanon NXT works principally by
- Preventing ovulation (egg release from the ovary)
- Thickening of the mucus of the cervix so that sperm cannot enter the uterus (womb)
- Changing the lining of the uterus, making it unsuitable for pregnancy
ADVANTAGES OF USING IMPLANON NXT.
Unlike other Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices, the Implanon NXT have a proven efficacy of being;
- Highly effective (99.9%). This means that fewer than one woman in every hundred using this method of contraception for a year would become pregnant
- Long-acting (lasts three years)
- Reversible and rapid return to usual fertility (most women ovulate within the first month after removal of the implant)
- Inexpensive – cost effective
- A small percentage of women have no vaginal bleeding
- Less period pain for some women
- No pills – no injections
However two other major qualities that makes Implanon NXT to stand out are;
PREVENTING INFECTION WITH IMPLANON NXT:
Poor standard of aseptic technique is a fundamental cause of health facility-acquired infection. Implanon NXT inserter ensures that the implant is placed with an aseptic technique to prevent infection; this is because it comes preloaded in a sterile disposable applicator. This pre-loaded applicator ensures there is no- touching of the implant rod during insertion thereby minimizing the introduction of microorganisms from the fingers or environment. Also, the possibility of the implant dropping or falling on to the floor is ruled out using this innovative applicator.
Implanon NXT applicator is also designed to prevent the rods from being inserted too deep into the skin. Too deep insertions have been associated with paraesthesia (neural damage) and migration of the implant (due to intramuscular or fascial insertion). Thus one of the advantages of Implanon NXT is that removal is very easy and in case removal proves difficult, it can easily be seen via x-ray because it is radio-opaque.
DISADVANTAGES OF IMPLANON NXT:
This remains a major challenge for the use of Implanon NXT.
Change in the overall pattern of vaginal bleeding which means changes in bleeding frequency (about one in every five women have no bleeding at all), irregular light bleeding, prolonged and/or frequent light bleeding, prolonged and/or frequent heavy bleeding. These changes have been noticed more in the first 3 -6 months of insertion.
Like other generations of IUCDs, Implanon NXT does not protect against sexually transmissible infections (STIs) requiring a minor procedure for insertion and removal of the device. Some women may experience skin bruising when it is first put in the arm and a small scar. Additional scarring have been reported arising from a difficulty in removing the implant. On rare occasions, women show some allergic reaction to the local anaesthetic or implant material.
HOW TO INSERT IMPLANON NXT
INSERTING IMPLANON NXT CAN BE DONE IN 4 EASY STEPS:
STEP 1: Have the woman lying on her back with her non-dominant hand near you.
STEP 2: Identify the insertion site, which is on the inner side of the woman’s non-dominant upper arm. Select your insertion spot which is about 8-10 cm (a clue is 4 fingers above the crook of the elbow) and with a sterile marker, mark the spot for insertion.
On a very small subset of ladies who present to the clinic, side effects have been reported during or after insertion of the implant. Commonly, the side effects reported in the clinic are headaches, mood changes, breast tenderness, new onset acne, dermatitis etc.
Despite these side effects, the implant is suitable for all women, except where otherwise advised by a doctor.
SALE: For the Nigerian Market, Implanon NXT costs as average of 2000 Naira.
