With more states falling into the grasp of the cerebrospinal meningitis epidemic, African Achievers Award has decided to tackle this scourge with its unique #LetEradicateMeningitis hashtag. The highly recognised Award is drawing the attention of the world to the obvious… “Nigeria may be losing this battle against the Cerebrospinal Meningitis”
The notion that the disease was limited to the northern part of the country is untrue, as a new Niger Delta state, Delta State have confirmed a new cases of the disease. Statistics show that this epidemic has taken the lives of over 400 persons (according to Channels News), yet the approach to total eradication is unsatisfactory. With some days into when the first case of this epidemic was reported, the Federal Government is just being able to secure over 800,000 conjugate vaccines from the United Kingdom, and it is expected to be in the country by the weekend… a sad case of the slow pace at which issues are done in government.
Nationwide, reports have it that a lot of sick patients are being treated under sub-optimal conditions and the regular antibiotics is grossly ineffective to take care of the new type C bacteria. Hence death toll is on a daily rise, vaccines are inadequate, hospitals are overwhelmed and doctors (and other firstline health professionals) are rendering services at the detriment of their own safety and health. Worst hit by this scourge are the Northern States of Zamfara, Kebbi etc, where more deaths are already recorded.
It is against this backdrop that the gesture of The African Achievers Award becomes noble and timely. Her organisers have promptly setup FREE consultations call line 08132716533. Hopefully this campaign would create the right portal where citizens can call in and speak to professionals about meningitis and how to prevent, treat and report new cases.
We encourage other bodies to step up their game and offer to join to eradicate meningitis from our country.
