Is It Possible To Remember Events That Led Up To A Coma… 23-Days Coma Survivor Speaks

Virali Modi was in coma for 23 days and she shares her experience on our Quora community:

I don’t know if it’s the same for everyone, but I couldn’t remember anything. I couldn’t remember my past, my sickness, how I became sick, what I did during those days, the treatment I had received, or the people I had met during the time of my hospital stay and before.

Slowly after the coma, I started remembering bits and pieces of my past. I couldn’t remember certain memories, but if a food, sound, or smell was introduced to me that was related to a certain memory, I felt nostalgic. I still couldn’t remember what I had done, but I felt nostalgic and had déjà vu.

It was extremely frustrating and disheartening. It currently affects me till this date. I can’t remember things quite easily. I think it has to do with the swelling that was present in my brain, at the time. So, if I forget your name or a memory regarding us, please forgive me. It isn’t on purpose.

The experience of every survivor of coma is never the same. However, the tender loving care of family, friends, loved ones is definitely needed if the patient is to survive and be integrated back into the society.
